Native American Necklaces

NATIVE AMERICAN NECKLACES…there is nothing more beautiful than a handmade turquoise necklace by renowned Navajo artist Marcella Teller. She uses a variety of shapes to make even the smallest turquoise choker a wonderful piece of art. Marcella Teller necklaces are very attractive and recognizable for the combination of varying shades of blue and green turquoise. Her petite turquoise chokers are the perfect necklace for a little girl and by adding a Native American pendant you could create an entirely different look. Marcella’s multi-strand turquoise necklaces are a vision to be seen. She has a particular knack for arranging a variety of colors and shapes of turquoise in a pleasing pattern that is wonderfully unusual. In addition to the various colors of turquoise Marcella also combines marvelous multi-stones in what is called a treasure beads necklace. These beautiful multi-color necklaces include blue lapis, green malachite, lavender charoite, turquoise and other stones and will be a great addition to your Native American jewelry collection. You really need to see them to believe the incredible combination of colors! Be sure to see Marcella’s beautiful coral necklaces and spiny oyster necklaces. All of her beads are hand strung on flexible and durable nylon-coated wire and finished with a sterling silver hook and eye clasp. Marcella Teller jewelry from redrocktrading.com includes a Certificate of Authenticity and picture of the artist.

Native American Earrings

NATIVE AMERICAN EARRINGS…For anyone wishing to own a piece of Native American jewelry, a pair of earrings is the perfect way to start your collection. Authentic Native American earrings should include a certificate of authenticity which identifies the stone used, silver purity, name of artist and tribal affiliation. Reputable dealers who have been purchasing Native American jewelry for a long time and have established professional relationships with the artists, buy direct and are able to authenticate the jewelry. At Red Rock Trading we include photos of the artist on the Certificates of Authenticity of those who we purchase from directly. You might prefer a traditional Navajo style earring made of hand-stamped sterling silver or a more contemporary lab opal hoop earring. Turquoise can range in color from blue to green and with or without matrix (darker veins running through the turquoise). Most domestic turquoise comes from mines located in Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Nevada. Other stones popular in Native American earrings are red coral, lapis, charoite, spiny oyster, mother of pearl, and onyx, just to name a few. The combinations are endless. Red Rock Trading carries a wide variety of Navajo earrings, Zuni earrings and Hopi earrings including earrings from these award-winning silversmiths: Sam Gray, Peter Nelson, Everett and Mary Teller, Amy Quandelacy. Whichever you prefer , a pair of authentic Native American earrings will be a treasured addition to your Indian Jewelry collection.

Authentic Native American Bolo Ties

BOLO TIE or more correctly BOLA TIE: The Southwestern bolo tie had its beginning way back with the Native Americans before the Europeans arrived. They would clasp their bandannas together while working to keep their necks shaded and so they would not lose their scarves. This creative idea grew and soon the Native Americans, in particular the Navajos, started to use shells or a silver concho with strings to hold them on. Thus, the bolo tie was conceived. Others tell of the American pioneers basically using the same idea of tying their bandannas together. The Arizona story is that of Victor Cedarstaff who claims that in 1940 his hat blew off with his sterling silver hatband on it. After finding his hat, he took the hatband and put it around his neck to keep from losing it. The next place he stopped his friends said, “Victor, we like your new tie.” Mr. Cedarstaff applied for a patent for the bolo tie taking the name from the Argentine cowboy word “boleadoras” and added leather strings and silver tips. He was known as the “Bola Tie Man” and even had one of his ties on the map of Arizona for many years. Whatever the true story of the bolo tie or bola tie may be it is an enduring part of the West. The bolo tie is the official tie of New Mexico, Texas and Arizona. In my opinion there are no finer craftsmen of the bolo tie than Native American silversmiths. Award-winning Navajo silversmiths Sam Gray, Leroy Begay and Peter Nelson are masters of authentic Native American bolo ties. A bolo tie can be very fancy or quite simple and seen as either a dressy or casual addition to the wardrobe. As the popularity of bolo ties have grown, so have the intricate designs. Today you can find a beautiful inlaid bolo with hand-woven leather straps and handmade sterling silver tips by renowned Navajo silversmith Leroy Begay. An authentic bolo tie should be handmade of sterling silver with genuine stones such as turquoise bolo ties or lapis bolo ties. For a more contemporary or neutral look, try a plain silver bolo by Larry Begay. Authentic Native American bolo ties should be signed by the artist and include a certificate of authenticity. Most of the western bolo ties found on redrocktrading.com also include a picture of the artist. ENJOY your own personal piece of western lore and wear it with great pride!
